Description
Shelley Isabel Mann is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic medalist. At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, she won the gold medal in the women's 100-meter butterfly event, and was a member of the runner-up U.S. team that won the silver medal for the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Mann caught polio aged six and took up swimming to aid her recovery. She was a student at the American University in Washington, D.C.
She was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
