Description
Gregory Orr is an American poet. He received a B.A. degree from Antioch College and an M.F.A. from Columbia University. He is a professor of English at the University of Virginia where he founded the MFA Program in Writing in 1975, and served from 1978 to 2003 as Poetry Editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review. He is also a columnist and editor of the magazine, Sacred Bearings: A Journal for Survivors. He lives with his wife, the painter Trisha Orr, and their two daughters in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Featured on National Public Radio?s This I Believe, Orr has been the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and of an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Orr is the author of eleven collections of poetry, including City of Salt which was a finalist for the LA Times Poetry Prize. He is also the author of a memoir, The Blessing, which was chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of the fifty best non-fiction books of the year, and three books of essays.
