Ali Hosseini Khamenei is the second and current Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shia Cleric. Ali Khamenei succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian Revolution, after Khomeini's death, being elected as the new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts on 4 June 1989. His tenure as Supreme Leader has been marked by several major protests in Iran, such as Iran student protests, July 1999, 2009?10 Iranian election protests and 2011?12 Iranian protests. He had also served as the President of Iran from 1981 to 1989. In 2012, Forbes selected him 21st in the list of The World's Most Powerful People. As the head of state, Khamenei is considered the most powerful political authority in Iran. Khamenei was the victim of an attempted assassination in June 1981 that paralysed his right arm. According to his official website, Khamenei was arrested six times before being sent to exile for three years during Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's reign.
