Description
Calvin Wayne Emery was a Major League Baseball first baseman who played for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was 6 ft 2 in, 205 pounds, and he threw and batted left-handed. Emery chose to attend Penn State University.
Emery was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1958. About 5 years later, on July 15, 1963 at the age of 26, he made his major league debut. In 16 career major league games, he hit .158 in 19 at-bats. He had one double, and actually showed a good eye at the plate by striking out only twice. Emery played his final major league game on September 20, 1963.
During Emery's only season in the major leagues, he wore number 9.
Emery hit .400 for Eugene in the Pacific Coast League in 1969, collecting 104 hits in 260 at-bats. The following season, he played in Japan for the Hankyu Braves.
After his playing career, Emery managed in minor league baseball and served as MLB batting coach for the Chicago White Sox.
He died at age 73 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
