Served as a Colonel for the Union Army during the Civil War. Later promoted to Brevet Brigadier General. Fought in the Battles of: McDowell, Cross Keys, Bulls Run (2nd), Gettysburg, Chattanooga (3rd), and Wauhatchie. Retired as a railroad executive
